North Payments offers various merchant solutions, which include traditional credit card processing, fully integrated POS systems, and a gateway for online payments. More importantly, these merchant solutions can handle various card types, too, including traditional magstripe cards, EMV chip cards, and even NFC contactless payments.

Hardware Choices

Customers can choose from a variety of hardware options for processing card or contactless transactions. These devices include a 3-in-1 reader, keypad reader, PinPad Pro, Flex, terminal with touchscreen, and POS+ (to be used with a tablet). So, depending on your business setup and preferred payment methods, you can choose a device that best suits your needs. First-time customers get free hardware if they sign up for a year of initial term.

Month-to-Month Service Agreements

While many merchant services providers offer only annual or multi-year contracts, North Payments customers can enjoy month-to-month agreements. This creates more flexibility as they’re not bound to the provider and can choose to terminate the contract at the end of a month.

PCI-Compliant Security

NAB, the company behind North Payments, ensures PCI-compliant payment processing. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a security standard for handling credit card transactions. This feature is offered through the PCI-Plus program and ensures customers’ credit card information protection.

Detailed Reports

Merchants can benefit from free reporting tools included in the services. These detailed reports can be filtered to view relevant data regarding sales, transactions, discounts, refunds, or payment types. Business owners can use the insights to gauge how their business is performing and get actionable data for making important business decisions like increasing markups or adding new payment methods. Also, reports can be imported to CSV or PDF files.

North Payment software and devices are compatible with major hardware, including PCs, Macs, Android, and iOS devices. For instance, its mobile credit card scanners can work with Android, iOS, and iPadOS.

The basic hardware requirements vary by the payment solution you choose. For example, if you’re accepting card transactions via mobile device, you may only need a tablet to start (North Payments will provide the reader).

On the other hand, if you want to set up a traditional POS, you’ll need several devices, including:

• Screen (monitor or tablet)
• Barcode scanner
• Card reader (may accommodate contactless payments)
• Receipt printer
• Cash drawer (if also accepting cash payments)

North Payments can be integrated with commonly used business tools. For example, its software can be integrated with QuickBooks for accounting. Similarly, you can connect it with Homebase, a popular employee management tool used by retailers, particularly those with hourly workers.

In addition, the PayAnywhere SDK allows developers to add payment processing technology natively to their iOS and Android apps, websites, or POS setups. (PayAnywhere is a NAB-owned payments platform.) Plus, APIs that work with the company’s proprietary processing platform EPX (Electronic Payment Exchange) can enable even more customization.

NAB, and by extension, North Payments, utilize a merchant portal named Payments Hub, where customers have access to all the services and features. This portal has a user-friendly interface with straightforward navigation and a clean, modern look.

The portal’s main screen shows key analytics like gross sales, refunds, and disputes, which can give business owners an instant outlook on their sales. From this screen, customers can manage tasks like invoicing, reporting, chargebacks, customers, inventory, and more.

There’s not much of a learning curve, as the interface is intuitive and simple.
